Real-Time Refinement of Kinect Depth Maps using Multi-Resolution Anisotropic Diffusion

چکیده
In this paper, we present a novel real-time algorithm to refine depth maps generated by low-cost commercial depth sensors like the Microsoft Kinect. The Kinect sensor falls under the category of RGB-D sensors that can generate a high resolution depth map and color image of a scene. They are relatively inexpensive and are commercially available off-the-shelf. However, owing to their low complexity, there are several artifacts that one encounters in the depth map like holes, mis-alignment between the depth map and color image and lack of sharp object boundaries in the depth map. This is a potential problem in applications that require the color image to be projected in 3-D using the depth map. Such applications depend heavily on the depth map and thus the quality of the depth map is of vital importance. In this paper, a novel multi-resolution anisotropic diffusion based algorithm is presented that accepts a Kinect generated depth map and color image and computes a dense depth map in which the holes have been filled and the edges of the objects are sharpened and aligned with the objects in the color image. The proposed algorithm also ensures that regions in the depth map where the depth is properly This work was supported by the Technology Development Program for Commercializing System Semiconductor funded By the Ministry of Trade, industry & Energy (MOTIE, Korea). Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the improvement in the quality of the depth map and also execution time results are provided to prove that the proposed method can be executed in real-time.

We propose the fusion between two concepts that are very successful in the area of 3D imaging and sensing. Kinect technology permits the registration, in real time, but with low resolution, of accurate depth maps of big, opaque, diffusing 3D scenes. Our proposal consists on transforming the sampled depth map, provided by the Kinect technology, into an array of microimages whose position; pitch ...
متن کاملA computationally efficient denoising and hole-filling method for depth image enhancement
Depth maps captured by Kinect depth cameras are being widely used for 3D action recognition. However, such images often appear noisy and contain missing pixels or black holes. This paper presents a computationally efficient method for both denoising and hole-filling in depth images. The denoising is achieved by utilizing a combination of Gaussian kernel filtering and anisotropic filtering. The ...

Depth map estimation is an active and long standing problem in image/video processing and computer vision. Conventional depth estimation algorithms which rely on stereo/multi-view vision or depth sensing devices alone are limited by complicated scenes or imperfections of the depth sensing devices. On the other hand, the depth maps obtained from the stereo/multi-view vision and depth sensing dev...

Three-dimensional (3D) object reconstruction is to represent objects in the virtual space. It allows viewers to observe the objects at arbitrary viewpoints and feel a realistic sense. Currently, RGBD camera from Microsoft was released at a reasonable price and it has been exploited for the purpose in various fields such as education, culture, and art. In this paper, we propose a 3D object recon...
